Child Protection
Manly Life Saving Club is committed to the protection of children under the requirements of the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (Offenders Registration) Act 2000 and the Surf Life Saving New South Wales strategic goal of delivering quality member services through a socially responsible surf life saving environment. See also NSW Commission for children and young people http://www.kids.nsw.gov.au/director/check.cfm
Many of our members work in a voluntary capacity with children whether it be water safety, assistance at events and functions, competition training or on patrol, etc. As well, any member may be asked to assist where necessary; in some cases in areas where a child under the age of 18 years may be involved.
Therefore, Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW) has directed that ALL members over the age of 18 years and those under the age of 18 years who work with children are asked to sign a Prohibited Employment Declaration (PED) Attachment 4 - please see document below.
Under the Acts CHILD RELATED EMPLOYMENT means any employment (including performance of work as a volunteer for an organisation) … that primarily involves direct contact with children where that contact is not directly supervised and includes employment in clubs, associations or movements (including of a cultural, recreational or sporting nature) having a significant child membership or involvement and that children and young persons receive such care and protection as is necessary for their safety, welfare and well-being, taking into account the rights, powers and duties of their parents or other persons responsible for them.
The declaration simply states that the person signing it is not a prohibited person under the Act.
Surf Life Saving New South Wales has directed that, if a member/potential member chooses not to complete the declaration or does not respond in writing stating the legal reasons for not signing the application for membership/renewal the application for membership or such membership renewal is to be rejected. SLSNSW Circular 2010, 2005/06 and 2016, 2005/06
At Manly Life Saving Club we believe it is up to us all to protect the children and young people in our care and to keep them safe.
