Allum, Parsons start Premiership with a bang!

In a race which was almost a carbon copy of Allum’s historic victory at the State Championships last year, the pair were never far apart throughout the race and were constantly under pressure from Joel Lewis (Manly), Drew Cairncross (Bulli), Hayden Allum and Mark Simpson (Cronulla). However Smith and Allum made it a race in two in the final ski leg, with Allum winning the sprint to the line by less than a metre to start a long season on the right note. Lewis pulled off one of the best results of his career to finish third, Allum’s brother Hayden was fourth ahead of Simpson and NIB Coolangatta Gold bronze medallist Cairncross (6th).

Concentrating on his pool swimming ahead of representing Australia at the German Cup Pool Rescue event in November, Allum was pleased to come away with the win having done such little preparation on the ski and board.

In the women’s area, Emma Parsons made a successful start to the season with victory in the Open Ironwoman. Racing in Manly colours for the first time and stepping up from the Under-19s to the Opens in 2007/08, Parsons stayed on the feet of Australian representative and surf swim specialist Brittany Sharkey (Bulli) in the opening leg, and the pair match it neck-and-neck on the board.

However Parsons, the 2007 NSW U19 Ski Champion, paddled her way to a huge lead in the final leg and despite falling from her craft in the final stages, managed to hang on for a comfortable victory.

“I came into today knowing I’m not as fit as I’d like to be and not expecting to come away with a win, but everything went to plan during the race,” said Parsons. “The plan was to stay near Brittany in the swim and then the board which I did, then we had the ski last today which is probably my strongest leg.”

Round 2 Premiership Series - Merewether 10 November 2007

Driving rain and 3-4ft surf created not-so-friendly conditions but a challenging and exciting carnival today in the second round of the 2007/08 NSW Surf Premiership at Merewether Beach in Newcastle.

The Open Ironwoman was run alongside the U19s, and it was the younger athletes who had the ascendency in arguably the most challenging conditions of the day. Round one Open Ironwoman Champion Emma Parsons ( Manly) led throughout the board and swim legs, however then became the victim of a torrid set of four foot waves, forced to roll on her ski and unable to negotiate the break for the next 90 seconds. While the rest of the field received similar treatment, U19s Nikki Chapman (Swansea Belmont) and Steph Carey (The Lakes) were first to make it out and finished in that order in the U19s. Crossing the line third, but picking up victory in the Opens was Parsons, who now heads to the final round with a perfect 12 points in the Ironwoman from the first two events.
